Organization

The HEAL Project (THP) is a unique organization providing hands-on programming that instills healthy lifestyle habits in elementary school children while inspiring environmental and agricultural awareness through a comprehensive, interactive curriculum. THP teaches kids where their food comes from and why it matters.

Garden Program Educator Job Summary

This part-time, position will be responsible for the following:

  • Running a gardening program for 2nd & 3rd grade students two to three mornings per week during the school year at El Granada Elementary school
  • Leading and preparing lessons using existing THP curricula, developing additional lessons as needed. THP curricula reinforces NGSS and Common Core Standards
  • Additional hours in Spring are dedicated to leading Garden Club during lunch recess for 4th & 5th grade students
  • Leading compost programming that includes two touch points with individual or grouped classes for grades 3rd through 5th.

60% Garden Instruction

  • Deliver nutrition and agricultural instruction following THP curriculum, obtain and prepare materials, and foster a vital, pleasant, and safe learning environment for students and program participants
  • Lead students in seasonal cooking activities, demonstrations, and tastings
  • Lead students in gardening activities including planting, weeding, harvesting, composting and walking field trips to a local farm

15% Compost Education

  • Coordinate with teachers to schedule composting lessons in the Fall and in the Spring
  • Adapt current composting lessons to adapt to the El Granada school site
  • Make purchases to set up and maintain the compost system at the school site.

15% Administrative Tasks

  • Participate in THP staff meetings and trainings
  • Actively contribute to social media, write updates for school and THP newsletters as assigned
  • Maintain THP’s routine records, tracking, evaluation, and reporting
  • Find ways to build relationships with the El Granada school community

10% Special Events/Additional Tasks

  • Available for occasional Saturday work leading volunteer groups or filling in at the THP Farmers’ Market booth
  • Assist with volunteering and fundraising events
  • Be available to attend school events that would promote our programming school wide

No experience is required but preferred experience and qualities include:

  • Experience and enthusiasm for leading groups of elementary students in a garden setting
  • An understanding of agriculture and the ability to communicate these concepts in a fun and engaging ways
  • Strong group management skills
  • Comfort and confidence working independently and with a small team
  • Creativity, flexibility, and willingness to learn and share ideas
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Familiarity with Google Drive
  • Proficiency in Spanish

Additionally the El Granada Intensive Garden Program Educator:

  • Will comply with organizational tenets as outlined in THP Employee Handbook and CUSD campus policies
  • Will utilize computer to maintain tracking and routine communication
  • Will utilize own vehicle if assigned to get to THP sites/activities; provide proof of driver’s license and insurance
  • Will meet physical requirements: can walk up to two miles and able to lift and carry 40 lbs for 20 feet
  • Must pass fingerprinting and DOJ background check and TB test.
  • Will complete First Aid Training within six months of hire.

Reports to: Programs Manager

Position Type: Part-Time Irregular, 10-15 hours per week instruction/programming to planning time is approximately 1:1

Compensation: $17-$18 per hour DOE with $2/hour pay differential for bilingual-level fluency in both English and Spanish
